What do the twelve houses mean in astrology?
The rooms of life
If planets are characters and signs are their styles, houses are the twelve rooms where those characters tend to show up.

The idea, in plain language.
If the planets are characters and the signs are their styles, the houses are the rooms of the house they all live in, twelve areas of life, laid around the wheel. A planet's house tells you where in your life that character tends to show up.
Around the wheel, briefly. The 1st is the self, your presence and appearance. The 2nd is what you value, money and comfort and worth. The 3rd is words, learning, siblings, the neighborhood. The 4th is home and roots. The 5th is play, creativity, romance, delight. The 6th is the daily round, work, health, routines. The 7th is partnership, the significant other across the table. The 8th is the shared depths, intimacy, what is merged and transformed. The 9th is the far horizon, travel, belief, big ideas. The 10th is vocation and public life, the mountaintop. The 11th is friendship, community, the future you hope for. The 12th is rest, solitude, the inner sea behind the scenes.
Notice the arc: the houses climb from the private self out into the world and back to stillness. You don't memorize them. You visit them.
Two honest notes. The houses hinge on your birth time, so without one they are approximate, and the app will tell you so rather than pretend. And when you joined, you chose three focus areas, those are houses, and Your Sky surfaces whatever falls in your three first.
