What are cardinal, fixed, and mutable signs?
The three speeds
Modalities describe how a sign moves through a season: beginning, sustaining, or adapting as the next thing approaches.
The idea, in plain language.
If the elements are a sign's temperature, the modalities are its speed, the way it likes to move through a season. There are three, and each element contributes one sign to each, which is the kind of tidy pattern astrology is full of once you start looking.
Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) begin things. They open the four seasons, and they open projects, conversations, and eras the same way. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain things. They are the deep middle of each season, loyal, steady, and gloriously stubborn. Mutablesigns (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) finish and adapt. They are each season's turning point, flexible, clever at endings, already sensing what comes next.
Starter, keeper, changer. Most of us are a mix, and the mix explains a lot: why you love beginning but drift at the middle, or why you hold on past the point of holding.
